The Adjusted Age Factor and Pink Shoes

Sutton had his 3 month developmental appointment today. Yes, I said three months. Sutton is actually 6 months old as of April 3rd, but just because I have a six month old on my hands, doesn't mean he's crawling around and eating his string beans yet. Being born three months premature is taken into consideration when calculating Sutton's weight, length and developmental pattern. That's where the NICU follow up program comes into play! They provide ongoing physical and neurological evaluation, offer guidance and resources and begin early intervention if needed for your preemie's growth and well being. The follow up appointments are conducted quarterly, and are continued for three years. Basically, they are set up to make sure your premature child is growing properly and that by two years of age, they are all caught up. Sutton is developmentally where a 3 month old should be - and he's right on target!
Today we were once again up at the hospital - a place we now feel is our second home.
During the appointment, Sutton got to see his primary neonatologist, Dr. Hayes, that attended to him while he was in the NICU. It was quite the reunion - Sutton remembered her right away! She evaluated his health, growth, and development. Sutton's motor skills were on par and he was able to play games and interact with all the toys she provided. He weighed in at 11 pounds and 7 ounces, and measured 22 1/2 inches long. That may seem tiny for a 6 month old, but that's really healthy and big for a three month old boy. She also gave Brad and I an opportunity to ask questions about Sutton's behavior, development, and health. All in all, it was a pretty fun field trip for Sutton!
We also got a chance to stop in the NICU and see some familiar faces. It was great to reconnect with old friends and staff, and they were amazed at how much Sutton had grown in his short time away from the NICU. And you know what? He had grown. I had grown. And with or without the adjusted age factor, I just felt so blessed to have a happy, healthy, thriving little man in my life. Even if he did spit up on my favorite shoes.

If everyone who had a sad experience could use that to help other people, this world would be a better place. I really admire you for your intention. Reading about Sutton brought me hope and faith. Thank you for sharing your history and for bringing Sutton to our lives! I am waiting the day when we call you and Sutton will be saying his first words by phone. :)
