His Middle Name has been excitedly waiting for tomorrow, September 15, 2012, as it is National Neonatal Nurses Day! Enough cannot be said about NICU nurses and all they do for families like ours - the delicate care they give to our children, the support they offer to us (the overwhelmed and often emotional parents) and the care they continue to give to the thousands of babies born too soon each year. Sara, Sutton's primary NICU nurse from the first night he was born, has been such a source of inspiration behind His Middle Name, as she does so much for her family and community. Not only is Sara a dedicated nurse, but also a loving wife, a great momma to two of the sweetest boys I have ever met and the creative mind behind Keiki Cloths (yes, she somehow manages to sew clothes and blankets for others' sweet babies - can you believe her?!). From the first night I met Sara, she has nurtured and taught me about being a mother. She handed me my son for the first time, gently explaining how to hold him amongst all of the wires, probes and monitors. She was discerning, kind and humble. Sara spoke candidly with Brad and me, trying to prepare us for the journey we had ahead as parents to a premature baby. She helped us give our son his first bath, how to carefully change his tiny, preemie size diaper, how to dress him, talk to him and soothe him on our many daily visits to the NICU. Sara taught me how to breast feed my son once his feeding tube came out, always encouraging me to be patient with myself and the process. She also introduced me to my lactation consultant, and between the two of them, I am proud to say I exclusively breast fed my son for almost eight months! Not only did Sara take care of my son as he fought for his life, but she empowered me as a woman and a mother, and I will never forget that. To this day Sara is a big part of our lives and still has an amazing connection with Sutton, and we are forever grateful that God brought her into our lives.
On behalf of His Middle Name and all preemie parents, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Sara and all NICU nurses for their amazing ability to care for the tiniest and most sick babies. Your commitment and love for what you do is inspiring and beautiful to watch. Thank you for your love, support, sharing your knowledge and helping to give us the most precious gift we have - our healthy son.

I’m a southern gal to the core who lives for my family, has a serious weakness for chocolate, a penchant for anything that can be monogrammed and loves to craft and sew. Thank you for your interest and welcome to His Middle Name!
