Fibroid Awareness Week 2013!

Good day His Middle Name fans and friends - another week is upon us! I am actually under the weather today due to a terrible cold that everyone in the Lubin household has wrestled with for days. No amount of chicken noodle soup or Nyquil will ease this nasty thing, but I guess we're due because we made it through cold and flu season pretty much unscathed. Frustrating as it is to be sick as an adult, nothing is more upsetting than seeing your little one cough and sniffle. I just hope we can get our energy back and kick this cold before we head to Disney World next week, or we may have to cancel our trip.
Although I am not feeling my best, nothing can quell my excitement for what this week means to me. Perched right at the peak of Spring, Fibroid Awareness Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year because it's a time when women can pose questions and start healthy conversations about their bodies. Fibroid Awareness Week was established in 2010 and is dedicated to educating women around the world about fibroids, diagnoses and treatments. Often times, women are not receiving enough information on all of the options for treating fibroids and in turn, don't seek treatment until a marked experience like severe pelvic pain or heavy bleeding. In my case, by the time my fibroid started causing heavy bleeding and pelvic discomfort, I was already pregnant with my son. My fibroid tumor was the sole reason my son was born three months premature due to a placental abruption, and I carried that guilt with me for sometime. One year later, the abdominal pain and swelling from my fibroid resulted in a necessary total hysterectomy which took me months to come to terms with. Although healthy (besides the cold) and happy now, I would hate for another woman to go through what I went through; for my experience to be in vain. That's why education and screening for fibroids before pregnancy is key.
In honor of Fibroid Awareness Week, a number of free events have been sponsored by the Fibroid Treatment Collective and and it's founder Bruce McLucas, M.D. I have listed the initiatives below so you can pick and choose which events you like and mark them on your calendar. The best part? They're FREE!!! Enjoy ladies ... here's to a week of health!

Next week will be the Fourth Annual Fibroid Awareness Week and His Middle Name is gearing up for a week of education and events! What started out as a small week observed by only a few, has now grown into an exciting week that's creating a ton of buzz in the medical and health community. Because of my personal experience with fibroid tumors, His Middle Name has been recognizing the week since it's inception in 2011. Each year I try to find new ways to share the importance of the week and reach others, and this year is no different. I'm actually getting a head start with the help of the Women's Health Foundation!
Women's Health Foundation
is truly a one of a kind resource known for connecting, educating and empowering women who struggle with pelvic health issues. Recently featured on ABC's The View, they often feature guest bloggers who share their own stories - everything from endometriosis and pregnancy to menopause and cancer. I love this website because they are instrumental in removing the stigma associated with the "hush hush" attitude towards women's pelvic health, especially for teens and young women who are just getting to know their bodies. I am so pleased to have been able to contribute a small guest post regarding my experience with Uterine Fibroid Tumors, and take His Middle Name to that next level and reach more women from a larger platform.
I would especially like to thank Aurore Labenheim, the Development Associate at Women's Health Foundation for taking her time to get to know me and learn about my story, and choosing His Middle Name to be their headliner in honor of Fibroid Awareness Week. Please stop by and visit their informative and user-friendly website - I promise you that you will be enriched and better for it! A Day to be Shared!

I just wanted to update the His Middle Name family about our blessed day with our sweet Sutton Matthew: he was baptized today! Any preemie parent knows why we waited this long to baptize our son, as those first months of life are spent in the NICU and the months following are spent being the product of an overprotective "mama bear." But to be honest, Brad and I also needed to be in a deeper place within our own walk through faith. We didn't want Sutton to receive the Sacrament of Baptism because of expectations, but rather a true acknowledgement of our family's growth in faith. But you know what? I wouldn't have had it any other way because today felt destined to be the day we witnessed such an amazing moment. It was a beautiful and sunny morning, with Sutton's baptism witnessed by his parents, grandparents and a loving congregation. It was such a blessed moment to dedicate our son to the Lord and commit ourselves to nurturing him through love and faith. Although a private family moment, I wanted to share a collage of the day. Thanks for sharing in our joy!

"From the fullness of his grace we have received one blessing after another."

I am happy, I am happy, I am happy! No really, I am happy. There is no better way to describe how I have been feeling these last few weeks except to say I'm the happiest I've ever been in my life and that is worth shouting from the rooftops! As promised in this season of renewal, Spring has ushered in a new beginning and blessings abound. My son amazes me every day with his abilities and his zest for life. To begin his life the way he did - as a two pound micro preemie with the odds stacked against him and having to fight for every small victory - and come out so strong, smart and able is nothing short of a miracle. My husband ... where to begin? I don't know if I've ever met a more supportive and loving man. He works so hard to support his family and then comes home, not tired, but eager to jump right in and play with our son or listen to me ramble on about all of my big plans. He helps me with everything from cleaning to cooking and then some, and still has time to romance me with chocolates and flowers. It's the little things, isn't it? See, I've come to realize that joy surpasses circumstances. Joy is not about all the things that clutter our lives and distract us, the things we have or think we want. It's about those quiet moments of reflection; that "shift" that happens when we realize we are blessed beyond measure, divine in our imperfections and confident in our faith. I hope all of the fans and friends of His Middle Name had that kind of Easter weekend.
With that said, let the celebrating continue! His Middle Name is now a recommended resource site on Boca4Kids.com, the only website that serves as a family-friendly event guide in Boca Raton, Florida. I was raised most of my life in Boca Raton, a beautiful beach community on the east coast of Florida. Because Florida is such a sentimental place for me, when His Middle Name is recognized in any capacity there, I perk up and take notice! Boca Raton is quickly becoming a young, family-oriented community, and Boca4Kids enables families to meet one another and also allows local businesses to network and advertise their services and events. His Middle Name is featured as a support program in their online directory and I couldn't be more proud! If you live in South Florida or plan to visit anytime soon, please visit the website to get a calendar of family-friendly events. Go preemies go!

I’m a southern gal to the core who lives for my family, has a serious weakness for chocolate, a penchant for anything that can be monogrammed and loves to craft and sew. Thank you for your interest and welcome to His Middle Name!
