A Boy and His Dog

Whew - what a difference a year makes! Halloween conjures up so many different memories for me: Pumpkin carving with my Dad, roasting pumpkin seeds with my Mom, bobbing for apples at our neighbors house and trick or treating with my brothers and sisters. For me, it was never about the spooky and always about the spirit! There was a feverish excitement that coursed through me on Halloween, and I loved being able to let my imagination run wild while my mom sewed up whatever complicated costume I had dreamed up. I couldn't wait to be someone else - transforming myself even if for just one day. This year, I couldn't be happier being just me. Wife. Daughter. Sister. Friend. But most importantly, momma.
Last year my Sutton was only 28 days old, and the only Halloween costume I could find to fit his tiny frame was a pumpkin costume made for a two pound chihuahua. So there it was, my sweet boy being transformed from micro preemie to a bright orange pumpkin! I will never forget all the laughs, smiles and tears as our family and the NICU staff snapped photos and took turns holding Sutton. It was certainly a sight to see!
Fast forward one year, and my heavy, 20 pound one year old and his dog won 5th place at our local Halloween costume contest! And believe me, 5th place was an honor because there was some fierce competition. Some of the winning costumes were a UPS delivery man, a squirrel and a mariachi band! But to me, all the kiddos and their pets were winners. It was so precious to see all the smiling faces and effort put forth by the parents to make it a Halloween to remember. But ofcouse, only one won the race for my heart and made me reflect on where I was a year ago. A boy and his dog dressed as the Tortoise and the Hare. Oh, what a difference a year makes!

I love both pictures but especially the one of Sutton and Otis. I hope that they continue to have the loving relationship that they have for always.
